Queen Quet Keynotes at Neighborhood Summit

wp:paragraph

You are invited to join us for the 2019 Neighborhood Summit Kick-Off Dinner on Friday, March 15th at 6pm at the Cintas Center in Cincinatti, Ohio.

This year, Xavier University is honored to welcome Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation as the Keynote Speaker for the Neighborhood Summit Dinner. Queen Quet’s work is intimately rooted in the protection of the human rights and land rights of her people and personifies the true power and meaning of Resiliency-the theme of this year’s Neighborhood Summit.

Queen Quet is the first elected Chieftess and Head of State for the Gullah/Geechee Nation. She has dedicated her life to making sure that Gullah/Geechee culture remains on the Sea Islands from Jacksonville, NC to Jacksonville, FL. The Gullah/Geechee Nation had been historically referred to as a “nation within a nation” but officially became an internationally recognized nation in July of 2000. The Gullah/Geechee Nation’s mission is to “preserve, protect, and promote [their] history, culture, language and homeland and demand official recognition of the governance (minority) rights necessary to accomplish our mission to take care of our community through collective efforts which will provide a healthy environment, care for the well beings of each person, and economic empowerment.” At the center of the Queen Quet’s work is the preservation of the Gullah/Geechee cultural legacy. Queen Quet is a fierce advocate for environmental justice and human rights.

Queen Quet has brought the story of the Gullah/Geechee Nation to national and international audiences. The organizers are honored to have an opportunity to welcome her to Cincinnati to kick-off the 2019 Neighborhood Summit- we hope you will join us!
